H. Frank Carey Names Class of 2017’s Top Students

H. Frank Carey High School is proud to announce Maira Khan as valedictorian and Eric Jiang as salutatorian of the Class of 2017.

Maira earned this honor with a 102.28 weighted average. A truly extraordinary young lady, she is passionate about the sciences and increasing female involvement in traditionally male dominated fields. She possesses a deep love of learning and solving problems. Maira is the rare student who is capable of challenging and inspiring her teachers to be true masters of their content areas.

Outside of the classroom, Maira is a force to be reckoned with. She holds leadership roles in Students Against Destructive Decisions, the National Honor Society, Poseidon (the school’s literary magazine) and the orchestra. Maira has interned with Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and developed a program to get elementary school students interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a participant in the Science Research program, she has won high honor awards at the Long Island Science Congress in 2014, 2015 and 2016. She also placed first at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair in 2013. Currently, Maira is a member of the prestigious Garcia group at Stony Brook University, where she is engaged in research focused on renewable energy, in which solar energy is converted to hydrogen production, predominantly through photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

class-of-2017-top-students1Eric earned the honor of salutatorian with a 102.20 weighted average. Along with being a true gentleman, he is an inspiring and exceptional student who thrives in the face of a challenge. He seeks to push himself to his intellectual limits. Eric possesses a profound love and enjoyment of learning and solving problems. Like Maira, he is a rare breed of student who motivates and inspires his teachers to be experts in their disciplines.

Outside of the classroom, Eric is in a league all his own. An outstanding musician, he has received stellar marks from the New York State School Music Association and is a member of many of the district’s performance groups. He is a role model in the school band, plays piano for various school events, and tutors and volunteers for the Washington Street English as a Second Language program. In addition, he holds leadership positions with Mathletes, the Red Cross Club, the National Honor Society and the Asian Association. Eric thrives in Mathlete competitions and has been a member of the Nassau County All-Star team. He has also participated in state and national math competitions.

Both Maira and Eric are exemplars of what hard work and perseverance can produce. They are not only exceptional students, but role models for their peers as well. H. Frank Carey High School is extraordinarily proud of these outstanding seniors.
